Savings Breakdown

Adjust components in breakouts below

*Individual savings will differ based on the unique nature of each organisation.

Distraction

£ per year

Hybrid work allows for dedicated periods of focus, free from office distractions.

A lot of computer-based roles require periods of deep focus. Studies show that it can take up to 30 minutes to regain productivity after a distraction, so the option to work from home can help your workforce to stay in the zone, whether they’re coding or creating your next big marketing campaign.

Calculation:
Salary X "% Office Time Distracted" X "% Time Outside Office" X Total Employees

Commuting

£ per year

Staff can save time and money without the need for daily commutes to the office.

According to a recent study, London workers spend the equivalent of 23 days a year commuting, and 21% of their salary. Working remotely means that your staff can get the job done without sacrificing their sleep and savings, and come into the office for the important stuff. The financial benefit of time returned to the employee is illustrated here, pro rata.

Calculation:
Hourly Salary X "Hours Spent Comutting per Day" X "Working Days in a Year (255)" X Total Employees

Real Estate

£ per year

Downsizing your physical office space significantly reduces business overheads.

A large office space used to seem like a necessity. Now, we are seeing huge swathes of unused office real estate in our cities, as employees continue to favour some form of remote working. (The values shown are affected by the differing costs of real estate around the world, and space allocation per employee. A default value of 30 sq ft. is chosen here to represent the parameters of a single desk space, but 100 sq ft. is used as a general rule of thumb when estimating space allocation per person. Other spaces such as pods, meeting rooms, kitchens and employee breakout areas, aren't assumed in the 30 sq foot, as we don't assume in these calculations that these will necessarilly shrink as a result of hybrid working.)

Calculation:
Avg Cost per SqFT X Avg SqFT per Person X Total Employees X "% Time Outside Office"

Absenteeism

£ per year

People tend to take fewer sick days if they can work from home.

The UK sickness absence rate counter-intuitively fell to 1.8% in 2020 during the pandemic – the lowest recorded level since 1995. It’s hypothesised that people are less likely to get sick in the first place when they work from home, and able to remain productive through milder symptoms, such as seasonal colds. This calculation is dampened by a factor of 2, as it would be wrong to claim that 100% of absenteeism would be prevented by adopting hybrid working!

Note: WiggleDesk does not condone workplace practices requiring employees to work whilst ill.

Calculation:
((Salary / "Working Days in a Year (255)") X Average Days Absent per Year X Total Employees X "% Time Outside Office") / 2

Employee Retention

£ per year

Companies who don’t offer hybrid working could lose out on retaining and recruiting staff.

People are reevaluating how and where they work, having become accustomed to flexible working. We have seen record quitting rates in the last year, as people seek better terms of employment. Recent studies show that companies with a strict in-office policy could miss out on 70% of candidates. The costs of onboarding new staff are illustrated here. This calculates the cost in paying salaries during typical employee onboarding to replace those that would otherwise leave if flexible working wasn't offered.

The 'Avg days WFH' slider doesn't affect this calculation beyond 1 day, we simply calculate this benefit if some degree of flexible work is offered. In reality offering more flexible working, is more likely to result in higher employee retention.

Calculation:
Salary X Total Employees X Onboarding Time X "% Employees For Whom Hybrid Is A Must"

Utilities

£ per year

Hybrid work leads to savings in utility bills and other expenses.

With fewer employees coming into the office every day, utilities like heating, lighting and water, and daily expenses like coffee and biscuits – are markedly reduced.

Calculation:
Office Utility Cost Per Employee X Total Employees X "% Time Outside Office" X 12
